What Is Submetering?
It isn’t all that uncommon for each address to have one water utility meter installed. However, it also isn’t all that uncommon for multiple tenants to exist within that one address. Every tenant has different water consumption levels, so splitting costs evenly encourages abuse and waste while also penalizing those who make water-wise decisions.
Submetering does away with this by holding everyone responsible for the water they use and distributing costs fairly. Submetering is the process of installing additional meters inside the main utility meter in order to further break down how much water is being used by each tenant.
For example, if an apartment building has four units on the same meter, submetering would allow you to determine exactly how much water each apartment used. That way all tenants don’t have to pay for the water-wasting habits of one particular tenant and that one tenant can be held responsible for their decisions.
